What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is a client-centred approach that uses assessment and intervention to help people across the life span continue to do the things they need to and want to do. Occupational therapy for children involves supporting their play, self-care and student roles. When a child is having difficulty with one or more of these areas, an OT can support in various ways. A therapist will break these down into smaller areas and can assist children to develop their fine and gross motor skills, self-care skills such as toileting, showering and brushing their teeth as well as their social and play skills to assist them in developing relationships at school and in the community.
This can include working directly with your child to model new strategies to help them achieve their goals, provide parent coaching and training to support with routines at home, and collaborating with educators to support transferring these skills in a variety of settings.
Common areas that we can help with include:
Fine Motor and Gross Motor Skills
School Readiness
Social and Play Interactions
Sensory Processing
Self-Care
Emotional Regulation
